What's New with Lulu

Secrets

Psst...It's hard to believe- but, I am coming up on my 1,500th post (at the end of this week/beginning of next week)!

In celebration of the occasion I thought I would let you know 15 things about myself that you don't already know.

Please let me know if you have any questions that you would like for me to answer (they don't even need to be vintage related ;)

I also wanted to give you a heads up for the Portland Antique Expo show that is coming up next weekend, Friday, July 10th through Sunday, July 12th. I will be participating in the Expo selling vintage clothing, accessories and fabric. I will provide you with more info as the date draws closer.

Michael Jackson

Wow! It's hard to believe that Michael Jackson is dead! As a child I loved to hang out with my cousin and her friend and have dance contests to Michael Jackson music. Michael Jackson was such a huge public figure/icon during my childhood. Though, as an adult I wasn't a fan of the music he was putting out, I will forever reminisce about childhood dance contests when I hear his 80's music.

Scrapbooks, An American History & Lulu's Honeymoon Scrapbook

Scrapbooks

I just finished reading Scrapbooks, An American History by Jessica Helfand. This book is very thorough in it's history of the scrapbook. It features photos and excerpts from various different scrapbooks through the ages. Jessica Helfand writes of how scrapbooking was a hugely popular pastime in the Victorian era, to how scrapbooks evolved into places where people commemorated wars, school days, babies, vacations, idolized movie stars and recorded aspects of their daily lives.

Today I discovered that the author has a website called The Daily Scrapbook where she does daily posts from scrapbooks in her collection. This promises to be an enjoyable treat that I look forward to perusing. *Jessica Helfand left a comment on this post and invited all of you to submit your own family scrapbook click here to be taken to her website where you can learn how to submit*

Speaking of scrapbooks, you may know of my love for ephemera- so scrapbooks are items that are close to my heart. Back in 1999, when I was on vacation in Prague I bought a lovely Alphonse Mucha scrapbook. When I bought the scrapbook I knew that one day I would fill it with special memories- but, at the time I didn't know exactly what. In 2006 my husband and I traveled to Europe for our honeymoon. When we returned home that's when I decided I had the perfect use for it...

Honeymoon scrapbook7

I filled the scrapbook with postcards, ticket stubs, brochures and photos that we had acquired on our honeymoon, as well as text from the journal that I kept on our European adventure.
Here are some sample pages from our honeymoon trip...

Lulu Interviewed in the U.K. Observer Newspaper

Last month I met up with Eva Wiseman of the United Kingdom's Observer newspaper, her boyfriend Mark, and local photographer Brian. Eva came to Portland with the mission to write about the vintage clothing store scene here. I talked with her and found out what sort of vintage clothing stores she was interested in going to and then we set off on a fun vintage tour of Portland. You can click here to read the article that Eva wrote.

I Heart Hats

Last Saturday my friend Becky and I stopped by a local park for a quick hat modeling photo session (posted below). If you are in the mood for a new vintage hat, check out the amazing hats that I found for sale over at Woodland Farms Vintage (posted above).

Lulu's Vintage Interview on ephemera

Lulu at the textball
Several month's ago Marty Weil of ephemera asked if I would be interested in doing an interview for his blog and I said yes. Time passed and I finally, just recently, got around to sending him back my answers and some photos.
Here's a link to the interview
Thanks to Marty for asking me to participate! The photo posted above and with my interview is one that was taken of me dressed in a headband that I created out of pages from a vintage Stunk & White's Elements of Style book and a vintage English poetry book. I was also wearing bracelets, a skirt and carrying a purse that I created out of the same books. My husband (he wore a top hat, bow tie and carried a cane that he created using the aforementioned books) and I won best costumed couple at a fundraiser for a local non-profit called the Independent Publishing Resource Center.

A Vintage Trait- Kindness

I try to live my life in a kind and giving manner. I do this because I feel that this is the way that everyone should live- trying to make life better for one another. When other people do something extraordinarily kind for me it warms my heart and makes me happy. Two such incidents happened to me this weekend...

My fried Shannon told me that she had made me something to commemorate Olive and she wanted to stop by the Expo and give it to me. I pulled it out of the bag and found an incredibly cute and intimate portrait of Olive. In the painting Olive has angel wings and is accompanied by her favorite floral suitcase and the brush that she loved to be brushed with. The painting made me laugh and cry at the same time- it perfectly depicts Olive's chubby cuteness and short little legs...

On Saturday a mom and daughter dropped by my booth. The mom was set up at the show as a dealer. The daughter was wearing a vintage hat and looked so cute. When I talked to her she told me about her love for vintage hats. Her mom bought her a little hat from my booth. On Sunday the daughter came back by my booth, this time on her own, wearing another cute hat. I talked to her some more and gave her a kooky pink floral bucket hat that I had. Not too much later her and her mom came back by. Her mom (Elizabeth Heidt from Julia C. Maxwell's in Bolinas, CA.) had a sweet little silver necklace with a silver Hershey's Kiss charm on it that she gave to me in thanks for the hat I had given to her daughter. She said "sweets for the sweet"...

Both of these occurrences made me so happy and thankful that there are such kind people in the world!

Barbie's 50th Birthday and Barbie's Malibu Dream House

Adler & barbie

Yesterday marked Barbie's 50th Birthday!
For the occasion Jonathan Adler, interior decorator/potter extraordinaire, decorated a house in Malibu to look just like Barbie's Malibu Dream Home!
The closet in the bedroom featured 50 pairs of pink peep toe heels, there were Barbie dolls on display, and my favorite item was the wall mirror which was created out of 64 Barbie dolls (pictured above with Adler's reflection). For more photos click here
